Planet Science

Planet Science is an after school science enrichment club for 4th & 5th graders.

ONLINE Registration for the 23-24 school year opens Monday, November 13, 2023 at 6pm. Limited to 50 students.

Registration will close on Monday, November 20, 2023 at midnight or when capacity is reached – whichever comes first.

The Planet Science Club dates below have been confirmed with the school office and here are some of the fun activities we have in the works:

Meeting 1 – December 6, 2023 – Seneca Park ZooMobile

Meeting 2 – January 17, 2024 – TBD – waiting for confirmation from presenter for this date.

Meeting 3 – February 28, 2024 – Annual Bridge Building and Canned Soup Drive – the students will use Lego engineering kits to choose a bridge design and build it themselves. We also ask that club members contribute canned soups that we will use as weights to test out our bridges for the best design and strength. Afterwards, all donated goods will be given to the Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf. Our experience with this activity is that the smaller soup cans are the best size for fitting and stacking on our bridges.

Meeting 4 – March 20, 2024 – The Periodic Dinner Table – We will do some fun hands on experiments learning about some elements from the periodic table that are found in common every day foods.

Meeting 5 – April 24, 2024 – Earth Day – Environmental Science Activities – In honor of Earth Day this week, we will learn about plant growth, photosynthesis, chlorophyll, and clouds with a few activities that will teach kids about the science that they can find in the nature all around them.

Meeting 6 – May 15, 2024Annual Planet Science Fair – PLEASE NOTE – this event does not take place after school, instead the science fair takes place in the evening in the Scribner Cafeteria from 630-730pm. Parents, grandparents, and friends are welcome to attend to see our students’ projects. Doing a science fair project is not a requirement of club participants, but we highly encourage it. Club students who are not presenting are still welcome and encouraged to come and see their classmates’ projects.

Thanks again for your support of Planet Science!
